For the last 10 years Sjoerd has delivered over 30.000 photos for more than 300 different dance companies. Out of this huge collection rises Kairos, a dance theater catalogue that gives the audience a chance to recapture performances.
Kairos in Greek mythology represents the fleeting, decisive moment — that instant in which you must act. Not later. Now. It is the perfect moment that appears in a flash and disappears just as quickly — an opportunity you can seize only if you recognize it immediately.
“For me, that is exactly what defines my work. It is the art of intuitively sensing when body, light, space, and emotion align — and then daring to click. That moment is often so brief, so fleeting… but it is precisely there that I find my art.”
For many years, Sjoerd has captured all levels which led to a complete catalogue of more than 30.000 delivered photo’s for one single purpose: to promote dance. Since the work spans over 10 years, it became very diverse. From NDT to absolute beginners, everyone is represented in this project.
Sjoerd has been active in the dance scene as a dancer and a photographer since 1999. What started as a pure documentation of his own experiences in the dancing-scene, grew into a profession.
Where most of his work is aimed to promote a single piece for a limited time only, with the creation of Kairos he looks back in time and showcases his favorite works in prints. This way the photo’s will transform into new art-pieces and together they form a long-lasting time-capsule of the dutch dancing scene. Sorted in different themes like: personal journey, hip-hop, theater and experimental, the audience gets a glimpse of what is happening in theater. Normally these performances are only seen within the theater, but shown outside the doors of theater , the art becomes more visible and tangible.

As a part of the exhibition, Sjoerd curated a slideshow with more then 300 images to be seen on the big screen. This selection of photographs has been drawn from more than 30,000 images created for over 100 different clients. The works presented here represent some of the most striking and meaningful moments Sjoerd has captured. Renowned companies and artists such as IRC, SHIFFT, Summer Dance Forever, Holland Dance Festival, the National Ballet Academy, and the Academy of Theatre and Dance — among many, many others — are featured throughout the exhibition. Enjoy the 30 min slideshow that encaptures the wide diversity of shots made throughout the last 10 years.
Kairos the expo, was launched during de Nederlandse Dansdagen in 2025 and many other locations followed after that. The idea was born to create unique exhibitions for different events like Summer Dance Forever, Open Your Mind, and the Urban Dansdagen.

Parktheater, Eindhoven - Urban Dansdagen
KAIROS was seen during the Urban Dansdagen in Parktheater in Eindhoven. For many years Sjoerd has been taking photo's for the experimental battle called Open Your Mind. During this expo a separate slideshow was created to showcase a decade of experimental dancers during the battles.
