With pride, Sjoerd Derine presents in collaboration with the Nederlandse Dansdagen: “KAIROS” – an exhibition about dance photography in which vulnerability, courage, and surrender take center stage.
“Ten years ago, my journey as a professional photographer in the performing arts began. What started as a natural extension of my life as a dancer and performer grew into a mission: to capture that one, fleeting moment in which everything comes together.”
Sjoerd Derine has been active in the performing arts for over 10 years as a dance photographer and celebrates this with a unique anniversary exhibition: KAIROS. The viewer is invited to experience the impact of dance through Sjoerd’s photographs.
Kairos in Greek mythology represents the fleeting, decisive moment — that instant in which you must act. Not later. Now. It is the perfect moment that appears in a flash and disappears just as quickly — an opportunity you can seize only if you recognize it immediately.
“For me, that is exactly what defines my work. It is the art of intuitively sensing when body, light, space, and emotion align — and then daring to click. That moment is often so brief, so fleeting… but it is precisely there that I find my art.”

14 PRINTS
The selection of printed works forms a cohesive whole through which Sjoerd traces his own personal evolution. Together, they symbolize his journey of growth. The exhibition features fourteen prints — his personal number — with each image representing a meaningful phase in his life. Themes such as depression, autism, love, brotherhood, family, and dance are woven throughout this collection.
Anyone wishing to understand Sjoerd need only walk along these images. At the same time, art remains open to interpretation: what do you feel when you look at this moment? What thoughts or emotions arise within you? This exhibition is both an invitation and a challenge — to pause, to feel, and to experience for yourself.
10 YEARS
This selection of photographs has been drawn from more than 30,000 images created for over 100 different clients. The works presented here represent some of the most striking and meaningful moments Sjoerd has captured. Renowned companies and artists such as IRC, SHIFFT, Summer Dance Forever, Holland Dance Festival, the National Ballet Academy, and the Academy of Theatre and Dance — among many, many others — are featured throughout the exhibition.
